Magnitude 2.3 Earthquake Appling Georgia April 23 2012

At first this recent earthquake in Georgia was not reported by the USGS due to it's low magnitude, below 2.5. It was also not widely reported for that reason. Initial reports on April 24 2012 rated the Georgia earthquake at magnitude 2.1, since upgraded to a magnitude 2.3 by the USGS.

I came across this on twitter from Vicki Graf WRDW Weekend Meteorologist in Augusta Georgia. Here is the tweet, My reply, and Vicki's reply confirming the earthquake:

According to Columbia County EMA director, it is confirmed by SRS Seismologist, has not been posted on #USGS due to small size @CataulaGaWX

APPLING Ga-- Columbia County EMA Director Pam Tucker says after much research by the SRS Seismologist today, he confirms that there was 2.1 magnitude earthquake at 9:26 p.m. last night.

They found t was generally located near the intersection of the Appling-Harlem Highway and Columbia Road.

She says because all of his stations are located to the southeast, azimuthal coverage is not the best, meaning that the location is not completely accurate. However, it is probably within 1 -2 miles. The small tremor was not listed on the USGS map due to its small size. This would explain the loud boom and shaking that many residents felt.

Hurricane Irene - Model plots August 23 2011 - East Coast Runner ??

Models have shifted a little more to the east once again. It's still looking likely that North Carolina will be impacted, how much is anyone's guess. I would suggest all on the East Coast keep an eye on Hurricane Irene as she could take a left turn at any time.

Looking at the official projected path of Irene from the National Hurricane Center anywhere from Wilmington North Carolina, Morehead City up through the Outer Banks may receive a direct hit. Hurricane force winds will be felt farther inland.

Depending on the exact track Hurricane Irene takes, areas farther to the north are not out of the woods. If Irene is an east coast runner where the eye would remain over water, many areas would be impacted. Impacts would be lessened only due to the west side of the hurricane impacting these areas. Still, the damage form high winds and flooding will be great. Should Hurricane Irene move up the coast and impact highly populated areas and major cities like Washington D.C., Philadelphia or New York City, it will be devastating to the infrastructure of these cities.

The other side of the coin, Irene may not make landfall on the U.S. East Coast at all. With the High still firmly in place west of Texas and a deepening Trough from the North East in the East and shortwaves moving down, Irene may have a problem overcoming this. Of course no one can tell for sure if this will happen so everybody will need to stay vigilant.

This morning about 1:50 AM I'm woken by what I'll call a vibration [get your heads out of the gutter]. At the same time there are a couple birds singing that should be nesting, and the dogs are barking. It's now 4:37 AM and I've been up since. Couldn't go back to sleep.

So I decide to look and see if there was an earthquake. Nope, no earthquake this morning. However I did find one that went unnoticed, at least by me. Maybe it was reported in the news and I missed it. Probably not as it was only a magnitude 2.6.

Maybe the birds were alerting of this earthquake below ? Who knows. I do know one thing, the birds have been silent at night since the night of May 9, morning May 10.
